Player apps are updated regularly to fix bugs, support new devices and add features. Most updates are painless, but occasionally one resets settings or causes playback problems. A little planning avoids a ruined evening.

Why updates matter

  • Security fixes for the app and your device.
  • Compatibility with new Fire OS, Android TV and tvOS versions.
  • Performance improvements for guides and channel switching.
  • New features such as better catch-up or multi-view.

How to update by device

Fire TV Stick

  • Appstore apps: Settings → Applications → Appstore → Automatic Updates.
  • Downloader apps: many players show an in-app update prompt. Otherwise, download the latest version from the official source with Downloader and install over the top — your settings are normally kept.

Android TV and boxes

Open the Play Store → your profile → Manage apps & device → Updates available. Turn auto-update on or off per app.

Smart TV apps (Samsung, LG)

Samsung: Apps → Settings → Auto Update. LG: LG Content Store → Settings → Auto Update. Restart the TV after a major update.

iOS and Android phones

Use the App Store or Play Store. Updates are usually automatic.

When an update breaks something

Typical signs: the app crashes on launch, channels stop loading, the guide disappears or the login is rejected. First:

  1. Restart the device fully (unplug for 30 seconds).
  2. Clear the app cache (not data) on Android/Firestick.
  3. Re-enter your login if the app asks.
  4. Refresh the playlist and EPG in settings.

Recovering from a bad update

If the basics don't help:

  • Clear data and sign in again — note your favourites first.
  • Reinstall the app from the official source.
  • Switch to your backup player (see below) while the developer releases a fix.
  • Tell support which app, version and device you're using — we often know about issues already.

Keep a fallback ready

The simplest protection is a second player app. Your login works in many apps at once (only active streams count towards your limit), so keep IPTV Smarters installed alongside TiviMate, or vice versa. If one app misbehaves, open the other and carry on watching. See our best Firestick apps.

Staying current without risk

Update when you have ten minutes to test — not ten minutes before kick-off. If problems persist, our IPTV not working guide and support team can help.
