Since 2024 the Champions League has used a 36-team league phase, followed by knockout play-offs and the traditional knockout rounds. More teams, more matches and more simultaneous kick-offs make it one of the busiest competitions to follow at home.
How the competition works
| Stage | When | Format |
|---|---|---|
| League phase | September–January | Each club plays eight different opponents |
| Knockout play-offs | February | Teams 9–24 play two-legged ties |
| Round of 16 to semi-finals | March–May | Two-legged ties |
| Final | Late May / early June | Single match |
Who broadcasts it in the UK?
For the 2024–27 cycle, TNT Sports shows most matches, while Amazon Prime Video has the first pick of a Tuesday game each matchday. Free-to-air highlights have varied by season. Rights for future seasons are tendered separately, so always check current listings.
What you need for smooth streaming
- 10 Mbps per HD screen, 25 Mbps for 4K.
- A capable device: Fire TV Stick 4K, Apple TV 4K, Android TV box or a recent Smart TV.
- Ideally a wired connection — 8pm on a European night is peak time.
Setting up on your device
Firestick and streaming sticks
Install TiviMate or IPTV Smarters and add your sports channels to favourites before matchday. Firestick guide.
Smart TVs and Android boxes
Use a supported player; an Android box with Ethernet is ideal for big nights. Smart TV guide.
Phones and tablets
Perfect for following a second game alongside the main TV.
Following several matches at once
- Multi-screen: watch different games on different devices, up to your plan's connection limit. See IPTV multiscreen.
- Multi-view: some players (including TiviMate and Smarters on supported devices) show up to four channels on one screen.
Tips for smooth European nights
- Test your sports channels at 7:30pm, not 7:59pm.
- Restart your router earlier in the day.
- Pause downloads and console updates during the match.
- Keep a second player app installed as a backup.
- If 4K stutters, switch to the HD version.
