Recording isn't built into every IPTV setup, but it's possible with the right player app. For many viewers, catch-up is simpler.
Does IPTV support recording?
Recording happens in the player app, which saves the stream to your device or an external drive. Your subscription provides the stream; the app does the recording.
Apps that support recording
| App | Recording | Scheduling from guide |
|---|---|---|
| TiviMate (Premium) | Yes | Yes |
| XCIPTV | Yes | Yes |
| IPTV Smarters | Limited (some versions/devices) | Limited |
| Kodi (PVR) | With extra setup | Yes |
| MAG boxes | Via USB on supported models | Yes |
Catch-up: the practical alternative
On supported channels, catch-up lets you watch programmes from the past few days without recording. No storage, no scheduling. See IPTV catch-up.
Comparing options
| Recording | Catch-up | |
|---|---|---|
| Storage | Your device | Provider's servers |
| Planning | Schedule ahead | None |
| How long it lasts | Until deleted | Around 7 days |
| Channels | Any you can watch | Supported channels only |
Scheduling recordings from the guide
In TiviMate: open the TV guide, select a future programme and choose Record. Set the storage location in Settings → Recording first. An accurate EPG is essential.
Limitations
- Each recording uses a connection.
- Device storage fills quickly.
- Recordings stay on the device that made them.
- Some streams can't be recorded.
Storage requirements
| Quality | Approx. per hour |
|---|---|
| SD | 1–2 GB |
| HD | 3–4 GB |
| 4K | 7–10 GB |
Use a USB drive (OTG adapter for Firestick) or network storage.
Device recommendations
An Android TV box or Nvidia Shield with USB storage is ideal. Firesticks work but need external storage.
Final thoughts
For most people, catch-up covers missed programmes. If you want to keep shows, set up recording in TiviMate with external storage. Try both during your free trial.
